And now, the ends:
The Super Bowl Rosters:
–The Panthers are actually older than the Broncos, with an average age of 26.89 (the second-oldest in the league). The Broncos average age is 26.19.
–Quarterback Peyton Manning, at 39, is the oldest Bronco (and, as I’m sure you know, the oldest quarterback to start in a Super Bowl). Lorenzo Doss, a Broncos cornerback, is the youngest at 21. Defensive tackle, Dwan Edwards, is the oldest Panther at 34. Linebacker Shaq Thompson is the youngest, at 21.
–The SEC has 31 players total on the rosters (active and inactive) of this year’s Super Bowl teams. The PAC-12 is next with 23. Ohio State is the college with the most representatives, with six. National champs, Alabama, have three players. Small FCS school Coastal Carolina has two (fullback, Mike Tolbert, and cornerback, Josh Norman, both on the Panthers).
–The Broncos 26-year-old backup center, James Ferentz, is the son of Iowa coach, Kirk Ferentz.
–The Carolina Panthers have six former NFL players on their coaching roster: Head coach, Ron Rivera; offensive coordinator, Mike Shula; assistant offensive line coach, Ray Brown; quarterback coach, Ken Dorsey; assistant special teams coach, Curtis Fuller and; wide receivers coach, Ricky Proehl.
–The Denver Broncos have three former NFL players on their coaching roster: Head coach, Gary Kubiak; offensive coordinator, Rick Dennison and; outside linebackers coach, Fred Pagac.
–Broncos strength coach, Luke Richesson, is married to Anita Nall, the former U.S. Olympic swimmer who won a gold medal in the 1992 Olympics at the age of 16.
–John Fox, the current coach of the Chicago Bears, coached the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2003 and the Broncos to the Super Bowl in 2013. He lost both games.
–Denver Broncos owner, Pat Bowlen, is 71. He is the son of a Canadian wildcatter, and is a former triathlete and marathoner. Bowlen stepped down as the team’s CEO in 2014 because he has Alzheimer’s disease.
–Carolina Panthers owner, Jerry Richardson, is 79. He famously caught a touchdown pass from Johnny Unitas in the 1959 NFL championship game, which his Baltimore Colts team won. Richardson, bizarrely, fired his two sons from management positions at the Panthers in 2009. With a win, Richardson would become the first person to win an NFL title as a player and an owner.
–Charlotte’s population is 809,958 (17th in the U.S.). The median household income is $52,375.
–Denver’s population is 663,862 (21st in the U.S.) The median household income is $51,800.
The Sports Brands:
Cam Newton is a prominent Under Armour endorser. Peyton Manning endorses Nike (which also has the NFL apparel contract. Players can wear shoes and/or gloves from rival brands, though). In the 2011 BCS National Championship game, Newton’s Auburn Tigers (an Under Armour school) beat the Oregon Ducks (a Nike school), 22-19.
